10 Essential Things to Know About How Water Pumps Work

Every single day, water pump dealers are swamped by customers looking for pumping solutions. VEMC is the leading Kirloskar Water Pump Dealer based in Mumbai.

In This Blog, We Take You Through 10 Essential Things About Pumping:

Purpose of Pumps

The simple job of a water pump is to transfer water from point A to B, often with speed or against gravity.

Types of Pumps

Some of the most in-demand pumps available with VEMC –– the top industrial water pumps suppliers in Mumbai –– are:

  • Centrifugal Pumps: They boost the velocity of the liquid using the mechanical power of a rotating (hence the name ‘centrifugal’) impeller.
  • Submersible Pumps: These pumps are immersed in the medium that is to be transferred. These highly efficient pumps are available with all Kirloskar pump dealers including VEMC.
  • Fire Hydrant Systems: As soon as the fire is detected, these pumps automatically switch on and start spraying water through sprinklers.

Key Components

Pumps have three main components –– the casing, an impeller and a motor. The casing houses and protects the pump. The impeller is simply a set of blades that is rotated by the motor.

How Pumps Create Pressure

Pumps create pressure by transferring the mechanical energy of the rotating impeller to the liquid. The action of the impeller boosts the velocity of the liquid directing it towards the outlet.

Factors Affecting Performance and Efficiency

  • Design and type of the pump
  • Alignment
  • Priming
  • Wear and tear
  • Energy supply
  • Type and viscosity of the liquid

Important Considerations for Pump Selection

As all Industrial Water Pumps Dealers in Mumbai will brief you, your pump selection should be based on the following considerations:

  • Pump capacity
  • Fluid properties such as abrasiveness, acidity and temperature
  • Energy efficiency
  • Reliability
  • Ease of use and maintenance
  • Environment of operation

Installation and Maintenance

Before installing a pump, ensure the ground is firm and stable. Protect the pump from voltage fluctuations by earthing it. Ensure the alignment is correct to avoid unnecessary movements and vibrations.

Maintain the pump with an adequate amount of lubrication. Having a proper maintenance regime is important to ensure regular checks and inspections. Look for damaged seals, leaks and wear and tear.

Common Issues and Solutions

Some of the most common issues that your pumps may face are:

  • Pump not primed: Make sure the pump is full of liquid before running it. If any air is trapped, the pump may not run properly.
  • Pump loses the prime: Look for leaks and remove trapped air before operating the pump.
  • Speed of the rotor is too low: Ensure adequate voltage is getting supplied.
  • Suction is low: Clean out the strainer and ensure there are no obstructions. Inspect and repair the pipeline for leaks.

Safety Considerations

  • Avoid overheating
  • Replace old and worn-out parts
  • Test for air leaks
  • Ensure proper alignment
  • Use appropriate safety gear when coming in contact with the pump

Future Trends in Pumping

  • The use of IoT technology is enabling users to monitor and operate smart pumps from a distance.
  • New pumping technology is aimed at making the pumps more energy efficient without compromising on quality or performance.
  • 3D printing could enable manufacturers to ‘print’ inexpensive and customised pumps and spare parts.

Pump Energy Audit Leads to Substantial Energy Savings

Industrial Water Pump Dealers in Mumbai

Pump energy audits are indispensable to ensure your pumps are running at optimum energy efficiency levels so that you don’t bleed money unnecessarily. VEMC is one of the leading Industrial Water Pumps Dealers in Mumbai.

In This Blog, We Tell You Everything You Need To Know About Pump Energy Audits.

Energy Management

Higher energy utilisation can pile up your operations costs but it also means an added burden on the economy. Managing energy in your operations is therefore necessary, and audits are the starting point in ensuring optimum use.

Water Audit And Conservation

Pump audits also check your pumps’ overall health by conducting inspections for leaks in seals and gaskets. Likewise balancing the pumps is also important to minimise flows and reduce the pump’s power consumption. As the top-notch Industrial Water Pump Suppliers in Mumbai, VEMC provides comprehensive AMC services and can help you unearth various issues with your pumps.

Power Quality Analysis And Fault Investigation

Improper wiring, poor system grounding, and unbalanced loads are some of the factors leading to poor power quality. To minimise the possibility of equipment damage due to excessive power supply, interruptions etc, power quality analysis is important.

The auditor typically investigates common faults such as ground faults, power interruptions, flicker, noise, and voltage issues like sags and swells. They then provide a detailed guide on how to take corrective measures.

Electrical Safety Audit

Electric hazards such as short-circuit fires or electrocution could cause death and destruction. To avoid the risks of such electric hazards, electric safety audits are a must. These hazards could be avoided or at least minimised by establishing proper procedures and protocols, personnel training, maintenance programs and adherence to proper system designs.

Thermal Imaging (Thermography)

Thermal imaging can be used to monitor the movements of parts such as impellers for early identification of breakdowns. It can also indicate inadequate oil or lubricants and a poor cooling system. By using the thermal trending method, the temperature distributions of a component are tracked and compared over a period of time to identify slow failures due to leakages, blockages, etc.

Performance Assessment

A number of relevant parameters of the pump are studied to ensure optimum performance. These include flow rate, head, efficiency, etc. Any drop in these parameters indicates a sub-optimal performance and calls for corrective measures.

Project Management

A project management audit unearths any discrepancies between the planned schedule, expenditure, or use of equipment and tools. This comes in handy in large projects such as hospitals or office buildings.

Maintenance Service

An important role of audits is that it enables you to find the issues and faults with your pumps, and then take corrective measures to ensure proper functioning, optimum performance, and highest efficiency levels.

Awareness And Training Programme

Factory personnel must be sensitised to the proper and most preferred way of working with the pumps. This will ensure they are consistent with the overall company-wide endeavour to save money, boost efficiency and optimise performance. By conducting regular awareness and training programmes on the best practices in pumping, companies can achieve all the critical parameters.

Pump Shaft And Belt Alignment: Problems And Solutions

Running your pumps day in and day out, especially in an industrial setting, will inevitably result in the misalignment of shaft and belt at one point. But these misalignments must be kept within tolerable limits to avoid causing serious damage at a later stage. As any Kirloskar pump distributor or Kirloskar Pump Authorized Dealer will tell you, pump shaft and belt alignment is one of the necessary interventions of maintenance.

In This Blog, We Will Take a Look On Pump Shaft And Belt Alignment Problems And Their Solutions:

What is Pump Alignment?

Power is transmitted from a motor to a pump through shafts or belts. However, due to rigorous work day in and day out, the shafts and belts can get misaligned. This could cause serious damage to seals, create lubrication issues and cause leakages. If the damage is serious, it could result in increased downtime, thus affecting your workflows. These issues are in fact quite common in Industrial Water Pumps.

Overall, pump misalignment could drastically reduce the efficiency of your pump, and cause serious wear and tear, and unforeseen breakdowns. In the worst-case scenario, the pump can suffer permanent damage, requiring an unplanned costly replacement.

Early detection and correction of shaft and belt misalignment of the pump are therefore very important. As a leading Kirloskar Pump Authorised Dealer and Authorised Pump Original Equipment Manufacturer (APOEM), VEMC has unparalleled expertise in pump assembling & alignment.

Shaft Misalignment

Shaft misalignment accounts for nearly half of the breakdown costs of pumps. Shaft misalignment is of two types:

• Parallel misalignment –– which is of further two types: horizontal and vertical. Parallel horizontal misalignment is said to have taken place when the motor shaft moves horizontally away from the pump. Parallel vertical misalignment likewise happens when the motor shaft moves vertically away from the pump shaft.

• Angular misalignment –– is said to have happened when the motor and the pump shaft move away at an angle from the pump shaft, but both continue to be in the same horizontal or vertical plane. Angular misalignment could also be vertical or horizontal.

Types of belt misalignment

• Vertical or twisted misalignment –– takes place when one of the pulleys develops an angular error from the vertical angle plane. By simply lifting the feet of the pump (front or rear depending on the direction of the error), the angle error can be corrected.

• Horizontal angle misalignment –– is said to have happened when the driver and the driven unit are no longer parallel to one another. This can be corrected by moving the front and rear feet forward or backward.

• Parallel misalignment –– usually takes place when the motor is positioned incorrectly along its shaft axis. It can also be caused due to the incorrect positioning of the pulleys on their respective shafts.

What Are NPSH And Pump Operating Regions (POR) In A Pump?

The Net Positive Suction Head (NPSH) and Pump Operating Regions (POR) are two of the most commonly used technical terms in the pumping industry. As the leading industrial water pump suppliers in Mumbai, we can help you gain a deeper understanding of these technicalities, this article is for you.

Pressure and NPSH Terminology:

As the industrial water pump suppliers in Mumbai and beyond will explain to you, energy is described as the total head in meters or feet added. Head and pressure have a direct relationship. The pressure units used are PSIG (pound-force per square inch gauge). A pressure of 10 PSIG indicates that the units are “gauge pressure” that is, in addition to the pressure exerted by the atmosphere around us.

The NPSH available (NPSHA) stands for the total head at a particular point in the system, in feet or meters, greater than the vapor pressure of a liquid at operating temperature. It essentially indicates the relative closeness of a liquid to vaporizing.

Why it is important to operate a pump within its POR and with an adequate NPSH margin?

NPSHA must be evaluated at the pump suction. As soon as the liquid enters the impeller, the impeller eye has a point of the reduced head before the energy imparted by the impeller boosts the head. Due to the reduction in heat in the impeller eye, the fluid may fall below the vapor pressure, causing its vaporization and then suddenly condensing back to liquid form in a higher-pressure region of the impeller. The pump performance can get reduced due to the formation of vapor bubbles in the impeller. But the repeated collapse of the bubbles also causes erosion of the impeller, called “cavitation”. To prevent this and make your centrifugal pump as reliable as possible, it is necessary that a proper margin for NPSH exists.

Operating regions:

Pump impellers operate at a particular flow rate where there are zero angles of incidence between the inlet impeller vane and the approaching liquid. This is known as shock less entry flow. The flow of shock less entry is usually near the Best Efficiency Point (BEP) of the pump. When the flow rate is higher or lower relative to the BEP, there could be a mismatch between the approaching liquid and the impeller vane inlet. A greater angle of incidence can increase cavitation. The pump must therefore operate as close to the BEP as possible.

Thus there are two important regions of pump operations –– Preferred Operating Region (POR) and Allowable Operating Region (AOR). POR is the range of flow on either side of the BEP within which the hydraulic efficiency and reliability of the pump are not significantly affected. The AOR is a larger range of flow beyond the POR within which the service life of the pump is acceptable.

When pumps are operated outside the POR, the flow is no longer uniform causing localized cavitation. The AOR of the pump is affected by hydraulic loads, vibration, temperature rise, power limits, liquid velocity, NPSH margin, pump size, the potential for clogging, etc. Your pump manufacturer or dealer can help determine this region.

Does Your Pump Need Replacement? Here Are A Few Signs To Look Out For

The life expectancy of pumps on average is around 10 years. But sometimes they can fail sooner, or exhibit some symptoms which point toward the need for urgent pump replacement. Outdated, inefficient, and malfunctioning centrifugal pumps can impact your business profitability and raise your operational costs significantly. Being the leading industrial water pump dealers in Mumbai, we can share our vast experience to explain when your pump is worn out and needs replacement.

Why does a pump need replacement?

As much as possible, try to repair your pumps to get their aberrations corrected. But after one point, the repairs may no longer work, and just running the outdated pump can cost you money. As a thumb-rule, “if it costs you more than one-half the cost of a total replacement to repair, just replace it”. Quite clearly, the cost aspect is most dominant when it comes to taking the decision between pump repair or pump replacement. Here however are some signs that must send you out for pump buying.

Electrical winding system:

Overheating or failure can be caused due to excessively low voltage, and the problem of lack of continuity in wiring or windings can emerge from excessively high voltage. Your motor may need replacement if its winding system is displaying any of these issues:

  • Burned windings from running on single phase
  • Shorted turns are caused by high-voltage spikes, aged insulation, overheated winding, etc.
  • Open winding due to severe overloads, faulty coil-to-coil connections, physical damage, etc.
  • Phase-to-phase short
  • Ground, that is, winding shorted to frame

Sealing of centrifugal pump:

Seals prevent the leak of liquids in a centrifugal pump and these can cause a severe drop in performance and efficiency over time. In case you repeatedly notice liquid leaking out of your pump system, it means your seals have probably worn out beyond restoration and it is time for your centrifugal pump replacement.

The problem of rusting in centrifugal pumps:

With rust covering your entire pump, including on the inside, there is very little hope for recovery. There is no point in trying to overextend the life of your pump in such a situation. It will only cost you progressively higher to keep the pump running. Replace your pump as soon as you find rust eating into the parts.

Buying a new Centrifugal Pump:

Energy efficiency:

Centrifugal pumps are some of the most energy-efficient equipment out there. Any industrial water pumps dealers in Mumbai or beyond can help cut down your energy costs. Varying by industry, centrifugal pumps consume only about 25-60% of a plant’s electrical motor energy. This can further drop to about 20% if the pump is properly matched with the system requirements.

Pricing of centrifugal pumps:

Centrifugal pumps are some of the most cutting-edge yet affordable pieces of industrial equipment. Its price varies per size and power. Just to put things into perspective, a 100 mm centrifugal pump can cost a maximum of about Rs. 300000 in the Indian market. Likewise smaller ones of up to 0.37 Hp can cost around Rs. 10000.

How to Calculate Total Dynamic Head for an Industrial Pump

TDH for an Industrial Pump

The total Dynamic Head in an industrial pump refers to the total pressure when water is flowing in a particular system. It has two parts: the vertical rise and friction loss. In this blog, we explain to you the complete calculation of the TDH. So let’s get started.

Broadly, the TDH of a pump can be calculated by following these steps:

  1. Calculate the value of the vertical rise
  2. Find out the friction losses in the system as the water passes through the pipe and other components
  3. Add both these values to arrive at the TDH.
  • How to calculate the vertical rise:

As the name suggests, this parameter seeks to calculate the distance up to which the liquid has to rise from its starting point in the system below to the endpoint. If the liquid level at the bottom goes down, the vertical rise will naturally increase. Likewise, in case the level of liquid rises at the bottom, it has to rise over a shorter distance to reach the endpoint, and hence the vertical rise will decrease. With the increase of the value of vertical rise, the TDH also increases.

  • How to calculate friction loss:

To find out the friction loss, it is necessary to calculate the desired flow. The greater the flow going through your pipes more will be the loss due to friction. Friction loss also depends on the type of pipe in use, its vertical and horizontal length, and its schedule. You must also factor in the elbows, valves, connectors, or other components that come in contact with the liquid, and hence contribute to the friction loss.

  • The result: Total Dynamic Head calculation:

As stated earlier, TDH is simply the summation of vertical rise and friction loss. To arrive at the TDH value, first ensure both are in the same units of length, say feet. For instance, if the vertical rise in the worst-case scenario is 25 feet, and the friction loss of the system is 6 feet, the TDH value would be 31 feet.

  • Alternative scenario:

Always considers the worst-case scenario in case of vertical rise to ensure you have sufficient amount of TDH. For instance, in the above case, if the water level never goes below 5 feet, the vertical rise will always be 20 feet and hence the TDH value will only be 26 feet.

Other Considerations When Calculating Total Dynamic Head

A few other factors also have an impact on the Total Dynamic Head. These include viscosity, specific gravity, and temperature. The specific gravity of a liquid can slightly alter the friction losses. Likewise, viscosity can significantly increase friction losses.

Success Story : The Supply & Commissioning of Horizontal Split Case Pumps & Valves at BARC

A case study on how we powered the New Mandala water pump house at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai with our domestic pumpsets including foot valves and accessories.

In 2020, VEMC won the tender to supply equipment and construct a pump house at BARC located in a suburban Mumbai locality called New Mandala, Anushakti Nagar. The purpose of this pump house was to transfer fresh water to the campus at a faster rate. It was a project worth over Rs. 11 lakh and was carried out between July and November 2020. The scope for VEMC was supplying Horizontal Split Case (HSC) pumpsets, valves, foundations, suction and delivery pipeline.

Carrying out the project successfully required tackling each of the administrative, technical and logistical challenges effectively. We started off by taking the requisite permissions from BARC officials and submitting all the relevant documents like medical certificates for fitness and ID proofs of the personnel. Soon after this we got all the construction material supplied to the site to begin the construction on time. Finally, the pump foundation was constructed as per the established BARC guidelines. At each and every step, the progress and quality of the work was inspected by the BARC officials. At our own end, we made sure that each installation was tested minutely for all the functions to leave no room for any technical issues later.

However, the project offered its fair share of formidable hurdles and roadblocks. For instance, the space available for the construction of the pump house was inadequate. We initially decided to overcome this problem by skipping the foundation work altogether which would have enabled us to lay the suction and delivery pipeline. But then we thought against this alternative and instead decided to puncture the wall for laying suction and delivery pipeline. Although the BARC officials were unwilling to proceed with this alternative, we eventually persuaded them and were able to execute it successfully. Apart from this, the foot valve had to be installed at a depth of around 18 feet below the surface which turned out to be rather challenging for the technicians. We also had to carry out core cutting of the water tank for successful installation of the suction line.

Nearly all of these issues required specialised knowledge and skill to handle. Hence we did not shy away from hiring the services of skilled experts to meet these formidable challenges, even at the cost of some extra funds. To ensure the safety of our staff and technicians throughout the project, they were provided with hand gloves and safety shoes for every task.

The project was not just a commercial undertaking for the team but also a great learning experience. The key takeaway was right planning followed by careful execution. Planning tools like bar charts came in handy and helped execute the project smoothly. Thanks to this pump house project, the BARC has realised some substantial benefits, most important of which is saving time and effort that was earlier dedicated to storing water in the tanks.

Buying a Swimming Pool Pump? Here’s what you need to know.

A swimming pool pump passes the pool water through the pool filter and sometimes, a pool heater. A pump is effective when it passes the water through the filter once every 12 hours, also known as a turnover. The effectiveness is measured through the size of the pool and the turnover rate. It’s calculated by the gallons per minute (GPM) of water it passes.

What is a swimming pool pump?

It’s a common part of swimming pools that allows you to pump water through a filter, circulate it, and keep it clean. It’s an important component that ensures the pool water is cool and safe to bathe in.

Do I need a swimming pool pump?

Traditionally, pools were cleaned manually with skewers. While this helps remove large particles such as leaves, it’s not as effective for cleaning fine debris such as dust, sand, or dirt.

A swimming pool pump is ideal for cleaning the debris at the bottom of the pump to render the pool water dirt-free and ideal to swim in.

What are the key parts of a swimming pool pump?

A basic swimming pool pump has five different components. They are:

  • Water inlet – This allows the pool water to enter the pump. The diameter of the inlet directly impacts the flow rate of the pump.
  • Water outlet – The water exits the pump from this area. Again, the diameter of the outlet dictates the flow rate of the pump.
  • Filter – This is an important component since it captures the debris before the water re-enters the pool. They are also known as sand filters or strainer baskets and are built from high-quality, erosion-resistant plastic.
  • Impeller – This spinning component propels the water out of the pump. It sucks the water into the impeller face and expels the water through the side.
  • Motor – The motor is the force that runs the impeller, draws water into the pump and again out of it.

How does a swimming pool pump work?

At the heart of a good swimming pool is an effective pump. It circulates the water, disperses the treatment chemicals, and prevents the water from stagnating. It achieves this by pulling the water through an inlet, passing it through the filter, and then pumping it back out into the pool.

Why choose Kirloskar KPP swimming pool pump?

Success Story: The Installation of Vertical NK Pump sets at MCGM Mahim Pumping Station

This project was carried out at the sewage pumping station on Swami Vivekananda Road in Mahim, Mumbai. VEMC, a leading dealer of industrial water pumps in Mumbai, was proud to have bagged and worked on the project.

Pumping station | Egger Pumps

Nature of the Project

VEMC supplied vertical NK pump sets and valves to the MCGM Mahim Pumping Station. It also took over the successful supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of pump sets and associated valves.

Execution

The execution of this project happened in 4 stages:

  1. Procurement of material from KBL and Jyoti
  2. Pre-dispatch inspection of the motor in Gujarat, pumpset at KOV, and valves at Nashik in the presence of MCGM officials
  3. Dispatch of materials to the site
  4. Installation, testing, and commissioning of the installed system

Challenges Faced During the Project

The VEMC team faced quite a few roadblocks during the project:

  • The unloading phase was challenging. The unloading of material at the site was a bit difficult due to inadequate space for hydra. Moreover, the location was a high-traffic road and hence, a lot of intervention from the traffic police was required.
  • The installation location was 70 ft below the surface level. Hence, transporting the materials i.e., the pump and motors, to the location was not very easy.
  • Installation of valves in the existing pipelines because they were completely corroded.
  • Fabrication of duck foot bend from pump suction to the valve in CIDF.
  • During the delivery stage, dismantling the joint connections seemed a bit difficult due to space constraint and fitting issues.

How VEMC Overcame the Roadblocks

VEMC took proactive steps to ensure that the execution went smoothly. Here are the ways in which we overcame the challenges:

  • Completed the unloading work at night to avoid traffic issues
  • Closed penstock gates every night during the installation of suction valves. This was carried out efficiently even though it was difficult since sewage water was blocking the valve path.

Safety Measures Taken During the Project

VEMC ensured that the entire execution happened in adherence to all safety measures. To this end, all team members were provided with safety hand gloves and shoes.

Takeaways

Some major takeaways from the project were:

  • Execution planning and how to align the execution with the bar chart/methodology
  • Time management to ensure the project was closed within the stipulated time

Outcome of the Project

With VEMC’s successful installation, the client experienced smoother operations as well as reduced maintenance needs and costs.
